WARMSS
WA RENAISSANCE MUSIC
SUMMER SCHOOL
Join us for a new choral course exploring the music of the Renaissance, hosted at Notre Dame University, Fremantle.
From January 22 to 25, 2025, we present a summer school for Renaissance choral music in practice, hosted at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle. Led by one of the UK’s foremost consort and choral singers, Greg Skidmore, alongside three Perth-based choral experts, this course offers a deep dive into Renaissance polyphonic vocal music.
Greg founded the Canadian Renaissance Music Summer Schools in 2018 and we are delighted to welcome him to Perth to inaugurate WARMSS 2025.
Our application deadline has now passed. Please get in touch if you'd like to learn more about the course, get information on how you can attend some of the events that are happening in January, or want to be added to our mailing list for 2026.
What does the course offer?
WARMSS is dedicated to the study and performance of Renaissance polyphonic vocal music at the highest levels.
Come and learn from specialist tutors and be immersed in this magnificent style of music. Join us for four days of intensive rehearsal and performance, both liturgically and in concert, all with an emphasis on quality music making.
Who is the course for?
The course is open to everyone aged 18 and over, and all are encouraged to apply. We aim to operate at a high musical standard, roughly at the level of a university undergraduate music ensemble, and will be moving through a large amount of music during our time together. Successful applicants will have a significant level of sight reading confidence and some experience of making music in small ensembles. Being comfortable working entirely unaccompanied is important, and any experience working in one-per-part ensembles will set you up well for your WARMSS experience. Some familiarity with Renaissance repertoire will also be an asset, though we welcome people who are new to this music as well. Current and recent university music students are especially encouraged to apply, though a major in vocal studies is not a requirement, nor is the completion of a music degree at university.
Our time together will be very heavily focussed on performance; we will encounter academic, liturgical, and stylistic questions primarily through our practical engagement with the music itself. All that is required is an open mind and an affinity for collaborative ensemble music making.
